A denture is a natural-looking artificial tooth that's set in a supportive base. Dentures can be fabricated to replace a small group of teeth, an entire upper arch, or an entire lower arch, or used to restore both dental arches.

Whether from disease, malnutrition, genetic disorders, or an accident, a complete denture is the replacement of all of the teeth in a dental arch. There are two methods of insertion:

• Can be inserted weeks after the extraction sites and all of the surgical procedures have had a chance to heal

• Immediate denture placed the same day the last remaining teeth are extracted

While immediate dentures offer the advantage of not having to go without teeth for any period of time, it can require multiple adjustments as the tissues remodel and heal following dental extractions or other surgical procedures.

If you have sturdy teeth that are still healthy, partial dentures can be fabricated and achieve adequate retention and stability by having clasps on the teeth surrounding the edentulous areas. Sometimes added stability for dentures can be provided by implants. To learn more, call (507) 262-4659.
